For example, if you use a white sink because it gets dirty easily, you can repaint it to a darker shade.
Here, I will be showing you seven practical ways to refinish a kitchen sink.
7 Practical Steps to Refinish a Kitchen Sink:
The below steps are easy and very safe to be approached as a DIY project.
To begin refinishing, there are tools that you must get, and they are:
- Steel wool
- Trisodium phosphate cleanser
- Acrylic spray primer
- Epoxy spray paint
- Masking paper
- 180-grit sandpaper
- Professional painter’s tape
- Metal-etching spray primer
The steps include:
Step 1: Clean the Sink
To clean the sink, apply TSP or trisodium phosphate to a soft cloth and clean the sink thoroughly. Trisodium phosphate is more preferably due to its environmentally-friendly nature and for its quick removal of stains, old soap, dirt residue from a porcelain kitchen sink’s surface.
You can easily get trisodium phosphate from any hardware store. You can also check online for it.
Step 2: Sanding the Sink’s Surface
Use medium-grit sandpaper attached to a hand sander’s clamps, and sand the kitchen sink’s surface carefully, including the edges. The function of the sanding is to smoothen the surface of sink, so that when the paint is applied, it will come out beautifully. Also, sanding helps to smoothen minor scratched and small chips on the sink’s surface. This is highly necessary for no metal sinks.
Step 3: Further Smoothen the Sink’s Surface
After sanding the sink’s surface, use masking paper to cover both the faucet and kitchen countertops. Do ensure to secure it with tape and carefully apply it to the sink’s metal drain. Next, using a fine-grit sandpaper, further smoothen the sink’s surface. Do ensure you remove all residue dirt and dust. After smoothening, use a damp cloth to wipe out the sink’s surface.
Step 4: Apply Bonding Agent Over The Sink’s Surface
After smoothening and removing the dirt and dust, the next thing you have to do is apply the bonding agent. To achieve an even surface, the coating should be slim. After which you let it to dry for 5 – 10 minutes to dry and thicken.
Step 5: Apply Epoxy Primer To The Sink’s Surface
After the bonding agent has completely dried and thickens to the sink surface, the next step is to take an epoxy primer, and using a brush, carefully rub it on the porcelain surface. Like the bonding agent, the coating should be light. Use a regular pattern to move the paintbrush to avoid any appearance of brush strokes. After that, leave it for about 15 minutes to dry.
Step 6: Re-sand the Sink
After the epoxy primer had dried up, use fine-grit sandpaper to re-sand the sink for the last time. Take a damp cloth and wipe out all the accumulated dust when you are done.
After cleaning the surface from all particles of dirt, and it is now looking good, then take the epoxy primer and apply it the second time. The coating should be slim as the first one. Then leave it to dry for another 15 minutes.
Step 7: Use a Brush and Apply The Thin Acrylic Topcoat On The Sink’s Surface
After the second thin layer of epoxy primer has dried off. Use a good brush, and apply a light acrylic top coating to the sink’s surface. It is important you follow a regular pattern while applying the coating to avoid leaving any stain markings on the kitchen sink’s surface. Then leave it to dry for some minutes. After it has completely dried, take the brush again and apply the second acrylic top coating.
You are advised to go for the acrylic spray primer for nonmetal sinks, while for metal sinks, the metal etching spray prime is preferred.
After the last coating, leave the kitchen sink to dry for about 24 hours or more before the final cleaning or washing. Avoid using the sink heavily for about five days after the refinishing procedures to get a long-lasting result. And you are done.
